Italian Court holds ISP managers responsible for content uploaded by third party
The Tribunal of Milan condemned three Google managers for failure to comply with the Italian privacy code.

Guardian editor warns online newspaper sites against pay walls
Alan Rusbridger, editor-in-chief of the Guardian, warned newspapers against introducing pay walls on their news websites, by saying this could lead the industry to a “sleepwalk into oblivion”.

French "Creativity & Internet" report suggests to tax online ads and search terms
A reported entitled “Creativity and Internet” commissioned by the culture minister, Frederic Mitterrand, which recommends an introduction of tax on Internet advertising, was released. The levy is described in the report as a "Google tax" but would also be applied to Yahoo, Microsoft and Facebook, as well as other Internet services providers.

French Tribunal condemns Google for breach of copyright
On 18 December, the High Level Court of Paris ruled that Google will not be allowed to continue its digitization of French books without previous authorization.

Italian Senate approves draft law banning apology of or instigation to criminal activities on the internet
On 5 February, the Italian Senate approved the draft law on public safety, which includes measures in Article 60 that will allow the Ministry of the Interior to ask Internet access providers (ISPs) to withdraw or filter out any offensive material on websites hosted by them within 24 hours, if this material “incites to or provides the apology of criminal activities”.

The top-level internet domain (TLD) .eu which was launched in 2006 recorded its 3 millionth registration today. .eu is the fourth most popular internet domain amongst European country domains and the ninth worldwide.

Sony Music fined $1 million in US for collecting children’s personal data in breach of COPPA
On 11 December, the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) charged Sony BMG Music Entertainment with violation of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). Sony has been ordered to pay $1 million civil penalty, as well as delete all personal information collected from children under 13 without parental consent.

Yahoo! reduces data retention to 90 days
Yahoo! announced on 17 December that they would “anonymise” users’ data within 3 months, compared to a previous 13 months.
Under the new policy, Yahoo! will anonymise user log data within 90 days with limited exceptions for fraud, security and legal obligations. Yahoo! will also expand the policy to apply not only to search log data but also page views, page clicks, ad views and ad clicks.
